Position Paper for COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan
This year’s climate summit, COP29, will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan. During the negotiations, countries around the world need to propose stronger measures in various areas, including increasing climate finance, reducing emissions, and ensuring a just transition.
The years 2023 and 2024 have been the warmest ever recorded, with global temperatures more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The global stocktake at COP28 demonstrated that current climate commitments are insufficient to achieve the Paris Agreement’s goals. At COP28, countries agreed to phase out fossil fuels, triple renewable energy, and double energy efficiency by 2030. To avoid the worst consequences of climate change, these commitments must be rapidly implemented at COP29.
The climate summit COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11th to 22nd of November 2024. Here you can read the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s position paper ahead of the meeting.
